Openingsavond

[NL]Voor de openingsavond van het Festival van de Gelijkheid nodigen we de Palestijnse auteur, dichter en journalist Mohammed el-Kurd uit, in aanloop naar de publicatie van zijn non-fictie debuut Perfect Victims: and the Politics of Appeal begin 2025. Deze avond wordt gepresenteerd door de Palestijnse kunstenaar en onderzoeker Samah Hijawi.
Sirien Salameh maakt live illustraties tijdens deze avond, Adriaan de Roover en Hala El Mohor zullen de avond afsluiten met een muzikale performance.

In de Edward Said Memorial Lecture van dit jaar aan Princeton, gepubliceerd in The Nation, bespreekt Mohammed el-Kurd Said's essay uit 1984, "Permission to Narrate." Hierin bekritiseert Said hoe de westerse berichtgeving over de Israëlisch-Libanese oorlog bevooroordeeld was ten gunste van het Israëlische narratief en het Palestijnse perspectief onderdrukte. el-Kurd herkent een vergelijkbare situatie vandaag de dag, waarbij de westerse mainstream media een valse dichotomie creëren waarin Palestijnen "ofwel slachtoffers of terroristen" zijn en alleen sympathie krijgen als ze "perfecte slachtoffers" zijn. Hiertegenover schrijft el-Kurd: “We are human not just because we cry when we lose our mothers, or when we lose our homes, or because we have pets or hobbies. We are humans because we feel rage and we feel disdain—because we resist.”

[EN]For the opening night of the Festival van de Gelijkheid we invite Palestinian author, poet and journalist Mohammed el-Kurd, leading up to the release of his non-fiction debut Perfect Victimis: and the politics of appeal in the beginning of 2025. This evening will be hosted by Palestinian artist and researcher Samah Hijawi.
Live-Illustrations will be made by Sirien Salameh. Adriaan de Roover and Hala El Mohor will close the evening with a musical performance.

In this year’s Edward Said Memorial Lecture at Princeton, published in The Nation, Mohammed el-Kurd Said’s 1984 essay “Permission to Narrate,” which critiques how Western coverage of the Israeli-Lebanese War was biased toward the Israeli narrative and suppressed the Palestinian point of view. el-Kurd identifies a similar situation at hand today, with Western mainstream media creating a false dichotomy in which Palestinians “are either victims or terrorists” and only deemed sympathetic if they are “perfect victims.” Countering this, el-Kurd writes:

“We are human not just because we cry when we lose our mothers, or when we lose our homes, or because we have pets or hobbies. We are humans because we feel rage and we feel disdain—because we resist.”

He is best known for his role in the #SaveSheikhJarrah movement. El-Kurd's work has been featured in numerous international outlets and he has appeared repeatedly as a commentator on major TV networks. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including a USC Annenberg Fellowship, the AACC's 'Truth in Media' Award, The Calgary Peace Prize, OYW's Journalist of The Year Award, the Izzy Award for 'outstanding achievement in independent media', as well as the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from Lannan Foundation. Samah Hijawi

[NL]Samah Hijawi is een multimedia kunstenaar wiens werk zich uitstrekt over schilderkunst, performance, storytelling en onderzoek. Haar projecten zijn geworteld in historische narratieven en herdenken het hedendaagse leven buiten gepolariseerde discoursen. Haar recente project, Kitchen. Table., verkent voedselpraktijken en brengt verhalen in kaart over de migratie van planten, kruiden en specerijen door middel van performatieve diners en posters. Ze houdt zich ook bezig met The Aesthetics of the Political, waarin ze de kruising tussen politiek en esthetiek in kunst onderzoekt. Hijawi heeft mede Makan Art Space in Amman geleid en mede The River has Two Banks gecureerd. [EN]Samah Hijawi is a multi-media artist whose work spans painting, performance, storytelling, and research. Her projects are rooted in historical narratives, re-imagining contemporary life outside polarized discourses. Her recent project, Kitchen. Table., explores food practices, mapping out stories of plant, herb, and spice migration through performative dinners and posters. She is also engaged in The Aesthetics of the Political, exploring the intersection of politics and aesthetics in art. Hijawi has co-directed Makan Art Space in Amman and co-curated The River has Two Banks. Adriaan de Roover

[NL]De in Brussel gevestigde elektronische muzikant Adriaan de Roover bewandelt al meer dan een decennium een uniek pad in het genre. Zijn tweede soloalbum, Other Rooms, dat uitkomt op het label Dauw van Pieter Dudal, toont gewichtloze melodieën en geautomatiseerde geluidslandschappen, en stapt af van ritme-georiënteerde motieven. Oorspronkelijk opgenomen in 2020 en opnieuw bewerkt in 2023, verkent het album afwijkende texturen en botsende universums. De introspectieve muziek van De Roover streeft ernaar om verbinding te maken met zichzelf, anderen en de onmetelijkheid van de rest.

[EN]Brussels-based electronic musician Adriaan de Roover has been walking a unique path in the genre for more than a decade. His second solo album, Other Rooms, released on Pieter Dudal's Dew label, showcases weightless melodies and automated soundscapes, and moves away from rhythm-oriented motifs. Originally recorded in 2020 and reworked in 2023, the album explores divergent textures and colliding universes. De Roover's introspective music strives to connect with self, others and the immensity of everything else.
